The 2016 edition of the SCSDA Mayhem at Soboba event is in the books after finishing up the weekend under sunny skies at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA. Jim Hammond was the big winner in the Top Alcohol category defeating multiple time class champion Gary Mink in the final round with a 2.48 ET. The ultra competitive Top Eliminator class featured many class champion Billy Morris up against first time TE finalist Jeff Liston. This was a great race with Billy scoring the hole shot win in a 3.00 to 2.97 decision. Robert Skidmore took the Fast Fours class victory defeating Art Cronin while Derek Balcunas singled to the Pro Mod Unlimited title. The Johnson brothers dominated the Pro Bracket classes on Sunday as Charlie scored the Pro 2 victory while Wes turned on the win light in the Pro 3 final round. Kevin Cambridge piloted his dad Bob’s Dragster to a weekend sweep as he took the Pro 1 victory to go with his Saturday Sportsman 1 class win. Taylor Holmes did a great riding job all day long to take the Motorcycle Pro 1 title while Caleb Mings got by veteran racer Mike Brock in a tough Motorcycle Pro 2 final round. Junior class winners on the day were: Conner Moore (Juniors), Dylan Gothard (Peewees), Luke Kemble (Junior Dragster), and Blaine Denunzio (Junior Dragster Mini’s). Saturday was an action packed day of racing at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA during the SCSDA’s “Mayhem at Soboba” event. Jimmy Depasse set the sand drag world on fire with a blistering 2.69 ET to earn the A/Pro Jeep record & earn the title of “First Jeep in the 2.6’s. The 2.69 would earn the #1 qualifying spot in Pro Mod Unlimited for Depasse. Another potential World Record could be set as Robert Skidmore ran an incredible 2.682 ET in his Fast Fours Dragster. He has to record a backup run within 1% during eliminations to lower his current ET record. Gary Mink continued to be “Bad to the Bone” even after missing the first two qualifying sessions and unloaded a huge 2.44 to earn the #1 qualifying spot in Top Alcohol. Top Eliminator qualifying was dramatic with Paul Taylor being the last car down the track and stealing the top spot away from Jim Rossi with a great 2.957 on the 2.95 class Index. There was some exceptional racing in the bracket classes on Saturday highlighted by the Larry Minor Jeep Shootout, where Steve Winn turned on the win light to take the $2000 first place purse. Justin Adamson piloted his Jeep to the Pro Gambler victory while Mark Ratliff turned on the last win light in the Motorcycle Gambler. Sportsman class winners on Saturday were Kevin Cambridge (Sportsman 1), Wes Gilmore Jr. (Sportsman 2), Joey Weaver (Motorcycle Sportsman 1), and Jack Vandigriff (Motorcycle Sportsman 2). The first day of racing action is complete at the Southern California Sand Drag Association “Mayhem at Soboba” event taking place at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA. Jim Hammond led the pack in Top Alcohol qualifying with a sizzling 2.49. But all eyes would be on the lane next to Jim as Craig Mark had a huge wheelstand turn into a big time incident in the shutdown area. Craig will be sore for the next few days, but thankfully escaped major injury. Paul Taylor ended up atop the list in Q1 of Top Eliminator with a 3.01 in a session that featured several breakouts on the 2.95 Index. Robert Skidmore kept his name in the #1 spot in Fast Fours qualifying with a strong 2.77 pass off the trailer. Jimmy Depasse earned the top spot in Pro Mod Unlimited qualifying by just .01 with a 2.85/108MPH blast. Charlie Johnson defeated his brother Wes to take home the Friday Gambler victory.
