Sunday
Avenal Sand Drags in Avenal, CA witnessed some great racing action on Sunday in all classes. Dennis Rieck set a new track record with a 2.245 on his Sunday morning qualifying pass. Unfortunately Dennis was unable to set the new World Top Fuel record, but he definitely put on a great show for the Avenal fans. Another crowd pleaser was Gary Mink coming back from a broken transmission on his one qualifying attempt to win a close battle with David Morton 2.56 to 2.60. Top Eliminator didn’t disappoint with an out of control final round seeing Paul Taylor edge out Jim Rossi 2.97 to 2.98. Bob Cambridge made his first trip to Avenal pay off with his Pro 1 Dragster as he took the class win over Steve Foster Sr., and bagged the Quality Aircraft Care/Hammer Down $500 Bonus Bucks award. Another big winner was Charlie Johnson as he ended up on top in the conclusion of Saturday’s 38 entry strong Pro Gambler class. Other winners on the day included Oregon’s Jim Smith (Pro 2), Eric Moran (Pro 3), Ron Garnas (Motorcycle Pro 1), Taylor Holmes (Motorcycle Pro 2), Bill Meaney (Sportsman Gambler), Marcus Lancaster (Pro 4), Ryan Rodriguez (Junior Dragster), Preston Boespflug (Juniors 1), and Cheyenne Hartman (Juniors 2). April Fuels 2013 Presented by the Southern California Sand Drag Association at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA finished off on Sunday under cool temperatures and gray skies, but the action was intense on the track. Dennis Rieck continued to make solid passes in the Hammer Down Top Fuel car as he took the final round victory with a 2.39 to his teammate Marcus Norris’ 2.59. Top Qualifier Ron D’Artenay took the Top Eliminator class wire to wire victory running a 3.04 in the final round for the win over Jim Rossi. Daniel King and the Animal Control team emerged victorious in the Fast Fours class with a hole shot final round victory over Mario Tavares. Jimmy DePasse won a close final in Pro Mod Unlimited with a 2.94 to 3.10 decision. DePasse set a new A/Pro Jeep World Record earlier in the day with a 2.92 ET. “Wild Willie” Swim made a victorious return to the track in his trademark Green & Yellow Dragster taking the Pro 1 victory. But the big story in the bracket classes was George Amos taking another double up win as he won the Pro 2 class in his dragster as well as the Motorcycle Pro 2 class on his trademark 3-wheeler. Other winners on the day included Chris Adamson (Pro 3), Bo Crossland (Motorcycle Pro 1), Kyla Belville (Junior Dragster), Troy Adamson (Juniors), Gavin Gutierrez (Mini Junior Dragster), and Cody Mercer (Peewees). *Run Sheets from this event are now posted.
