2016 September / October

The past few weeks have been extremely tough for the sand drag community with the loss of several key members from different areas of the country. Please keep the family and friends of these great individuals in your thoughts & prayers at this time.

NSDN is saddened to report the loss of Arizona Top Fuel sand drag racer Charlie Brown Jr. Charlie passed away over the weekend after a lengthy illness. Charlie campaigned the “Team Extreme” Nitro-burning Top Fuel Dragster, which held the Top Fuel World Record in the Mid-2000’s and was also was a many time national event winner. He will always be remembered as a larger than life personality wearing his trademark Cowboy hat, ready to burn some nitro and have fun at the track. NSDN sends our thoughts and prayers to Charlie’s family and friends in this difficult time.

NSDN sends our condolences to the Hensley Family, long time west coast sand drag racers for their recent losses. Family patriarch Lanny Hensley passed away a couple weeks ago. Lanny was a long time sand drag racer and a big part of the USA races at Glen Helen Raceway in the 80’s-90’s. He was followed in passing by his grandson John Hensley this week. John piloted the family’s “One Piece At A Time” Dragster at SCSDA events. There has been a GoFundMe account started to help with the expenses of John’s funeral at https://www.gofundme.com/john-hensleys-funeral-2vyzm2g4. The sand drag family passes along our thoughts & prayers at this extremely difficult time to the Hensley Family.

There was another recent loss in the sand drag family as long time Michigan sand drag racer John Rammacher has passed away after a long battle with cancer. John came up through the ranks with a Blown Alcohol Altered before eventually campaigning the “Warp Speed” Ford-powered Top Alcohol Dragster. John was always a strong competitor on the local scene and also had great success on the road taking a Top Alcohol win in Primm, NV in the mid 2000’s. But even more than that John will be remembered as a family man always on the starting line with his son and daughter who were both top competitors in the Junior categories. NSDN sends our condolences to the Rammacher Family in this difficult time.

Sunday

The 2016 SCSDA Hammer Down Nationals at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA wrapped up on Sunday with exciting action across the board. It was an awesome sight to see the Nitro-burning Top Fuel Dragsters make the trip to Soboba for this event. Matt Ludlow set Low ET of the day with a pair of great looking 2.32 passes at over 160MPH. Gary Mink stole the show in Top Alcohol with a string of consistent 2.4-second passes capped by a 2.449 for Low ET of eliminations in the final against David Morton. Marc Whitmore had a dream weekend qualifying #1 with a perfect 2.950 on the Top Eliminator 2.95 Class Index, then he put his Blown Altered in the Winner’s Circle on race day defeating Paul Taylor in the final round. The Fast Fours final was wild with Art Cronin taking the win despite having troubles off the line while Kris Lauffer ran the 2nd Quickest ET in Four-Cylinder history with a 2.679 but he left too soon turning on the red light. Jimmy Depasse lowered his A/Pro Jeep World Record with an incredible 2.644 ET on the way to the Pro Mod Unlimited class win. There were no double or triple up winners in the ultra competitive Pro Bracket classers. Here is a rundown on the winners that took home the big cash on Sunday night: Bill Meaney (Pro 1), Jim Larr (Pro 2), Mike Record (Pro 3), Heather Taylor (Motorcycle Pro 1), and Craig Wright (Motorcycle Pro 2). The Junior racers also put on a great show as always, winners included: Delaney Browning (Juniors), Maddox Pena (Peewees), Cole Liston (Junior Dragster 9+), and Blake Adamson (Junior Dragster Mini’s). **Highlight Videos & Run Sheets are now posted!!**

The SCSDA Hammer Down Nationals at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA on September 30-October 2 will host a historical sand drag racing display highlighting the history of the sport. There will be a tent put up to display historic sand drag vehicles along with photos, videos and other memorabilia from the 1960’s up through the 2000’s. If you are interested in displaying a vehicle or memorabilia, contact Dan “The Man” Beard at 951-249-0939 for more info. We are certainly looking forward to checking out this display at the race, as we know some great pieces of history will be unearthed with sand drags having such a deep history in the Hemet Valley. Check out the photos below of 1975 sand drag racing in the Hemet Valley passed along to us by our friends at Greg Tounget Motorsports.
